Roman's army returns with the trophy

Tens of thousands of people crowded the streets of West London on Sunday to give the triumphant players from Chelsea FC a hero's welcome.

Such a turnout wasn't surprising, since it was the first time that the club had ever won the UEFA Champions League. It is the one trophy that Russian oligarch owner Roman Abramovich has coveted since taking over the club in 2003.

The victory is sweet not only for the owner, but also for the players who erased the ghosts of the 2008 final in Moscow, where they were defeated on penalties by Manchester United.

Last Saturday, Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the end of 120 minutes. With this victory, interim coach (and former Chelsea player) Roberto Di Matteo completed a remarkable turnaround, having led the players to a astonishing double with the FA Cup and Champions League. This, despite the Italian and former Blues player inheriting the team after previous coach Andres Villas-Boas' sacking midway through the EPL season which they eventually finished sixth. Their win on Saturday also ensures them a place in next year's Champions League.
