US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has claimed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has "lost legitimacy" following his ongoing crackdown on pro-democracy protests in the country, after pro-government loyalists targeted the US embassy in Damascus. Syrian state news responded by saying Clinton's remarks were "provocative".
