He may have been born and raised thousands of miles away from the country whose vest he will wear in his third Olympic Games, but Alistair Cragg has long since done enough to become accepted as one of Irish athletics' adopted sons.
Having grown up in South Africa and enjoyed a glittering college career in the United States, Cragg made the controversial move to represent Ireland in 2003 due to his ancestry.
Within two years, he had appeared in his first Games in the 5000 metres and earned his first major title with gold in the 3000m at the 2005 European Indoors.
At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Cragg once again performed creditably to reach the final of the 5000m as the sixth fastest qualifier, but he did not finish the medal race.
Another final berth at the 2011 World Championships suggested he is making steady progress.
